Writing Task 2

IELTS Advantages and Disadvantages Vocabulary:
Phrases for Weighing Both Sides

Advantages and disadvantages essays need a specific type of vocabulary: language that compares, weighs, and evaluates. The right phrases help you move beyond simply listing pros and cons — they show the examiner you are thinking critically.

6 functional patterns with phrases
Common mistakes and corrections
Evaluative language for "outweigh" questions

Why vocabulary matters in this essay type

The biggest vocabulary problem in advantages and disadvantages essays is repetition. Students write "advantage" and "disadvantage" over and over, or rely on "good" and "bad" throughout. The examiner wants to see range — can you express the same idea in multiple ways? Can you show the weight of each side, not just its existence?

Common vocabulary mistakes

Repetitive

"The advantage is freedom. Another advantage is learning. The disadvantage is loneliness."

Varied

"The primary benefit is freedom. A further merit is the opportunity to learn. A notable drawback, however, is loneliness."

Using "advantage" and "disadvantage" repeatedly tells the examiner your vocabulary range is limited. Vary with: benefit, merit, strength, positive aspect / drawback, risk, downside, limitation, concern.

No evaluation

"There are some advantages and some disadvantages. Both sides are important."

Clear evaluation

"While both sides carry weight, the long-term benefits of independence far exceed the short-term challenges."

For "outweigh" questions, you must evaluate — not just describe. Use comparative language that shows which side is stronger.

Neutral vs evaluative language

In a neutral "what are" question, present both sides without favouring either. In an "outweigh" question, use evaluative language to signal your position.

Neutral (for "what are" questions)
Present both sides fairly
"One advantage is increased independence. A corresponding disadvantage is the potential for isolation."
Evaluative (for "outweigh" questions)
Show which side is stronger
"The most compelling advantage is independence. While isolation is a concern, this drawback is temporary and far less significant."
Your teacher's note

Students often write "the advantages are more than the disadvantages" — this is grammatically awkward and vague. Use: "the advantages outweigh," "the benefits far exceed," or "the positive aspects are significantly more impactful than." Show that you can weigh ideas, not just count them.
