Your overall band score
Overall Band Score
Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB)
CLB is calculated per skill — not from your overall band. One weak skill can significantly reduce your Express Entry CRS points.
CLB conversion is for General Training candidates. Switch to General Training above for accurate immigration results.
Your four module scores are averaged, then rounded using these official rules. Many test-takers are just one question away from the next band — and don't know it.
| Unrounded average | Decimal | Rule | Final band score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.00 | 0.00 | Below 0.25 → round down | 6.0 |
| 6.12 | 0.12 | Below 0.25 → round down | 6.0 |
| 6.25 | 0.25 | 0.25–0.74 → round to half | 6.5 |
| 6.50 | 0.50 | 0.25–0.74 → round to half | 6.5 |
| 6.62 | 0.62 | 0.25–0.74 → round to half | 6.5 |
| 6.75 | 0.75 | 0.75 or above → round up | 7.0 |
| 6.87 | 0.87 | 0.75 or above → round up | 7.0 |
Your scores show where you are. Your teacher shows you exactly what to fix and how to get there.
Common questions
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Your overall band score is the average of your four module scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — rounded using official IELTS rules. Decimals below 0.25 round down to the nearest whole number. Between 0.25 and 0.74, they round to the nearest half band. At 0.75 or above, they round up to the next whole number.
Does 6.75 round to 7 in IELTS?
Yes. An unrounded average of 6.75 rounds up to Band 7.0. Any decimal of 0.75 or above rounds up to the next whole band under the official IELTS rounding rules. So a profile of 7.0 / 6.5 / 6.5 / 7.0 gives an average of 6.75, which becomes an overall Band 7.0.
Does 6.25 round to 6.5 in IELTS?
Yes. An unrounded average of 6.25 rounds up to Band 6.5. Any decimal between 0.25 and 0.74 rounds to the nearest half band. For example, a profile of 6.5 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.5 gives an average of 6.25, which rounds to 6.5 overall.
How many correct answers do I need for Band 7 in IELTS Listening?
You need 30 or 31 correct answers out of 40 to achieve Band 7.0 in IELTS Listening. Getting 32, 33, or 34 correct answers gives you Band 7.5. Note that raw score to band conversions can vary slightly between test versions — use these figures as a reliable guide.
Is the Reading score calculated differently for Academic and General Training?
Yes. Academic and General Training Reading use different raw score to band conversion tables. General Training is generally more lenient — the same number of correct answers typically produces a slightly higher band score compared to Academic. This is because Academic Reading texts are more complex. Always select the correct test type in the calculator above.
Can I accurately self-assess my Writing and Speaking band score?
Not reliably. Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained examiners against detailed band descriptors covering Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and (for Speaking) Pronunciation and Fluency. Most test-takers over- or underestimate their productive skills by 0.5 to 1.0 bands. A trial lesson with an experienced IELTS teacher is the most accurate way to find out where you actually stand.
What IELTS score do I need for CLB 9 in Canada?
To achieve CLB 9 across all four skills for Canadian immigration, you generally need: Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, and Speaking 7.0. CLB is calculated per skill independently — your overall band score does not determine your CLB level. Falling short in even one skill can cost you 9 or more CRS points in Express Entry, which may delay or prevent your application. Always check the official IRCC language requirements for your specific program.
